Orlando Fire Protection District
The Orland Fire District is seeking to purchase a Kid’s Fire Safety
House. Due to budget limitations, we will seek donations from the community
and businesses.
Kid’s Fire Safety House is a state-of-the-art teaching tool. The 28-foot
trailer resembles a single-family house.
The interior has a furnished living room with a fireplace that crackles and
appears to shoot sparks onto the carpeting.
The kitchen includes typical appliances, like a functional gas burning
stove, which are used to help children identify hazards found in their
kitchens.
The child’s bedroom is decorated with Dalmatian-spotted bedspread, dolls,
toys and other items. As children tour this room, the smoke detector blares
and the house fills with non-toxic “smoke,” operated by a firefighter behind
a one-way mirror.
When the “fire” starts, children are instructed to drop to their knees and
crawl to a safe exit. The bedroom door is warm to the touch, teaching the
children to crawl to the window. They can escape down a chain link ladder
into the arms of a firefighter.
The house includes a computerized 9-1-1 phone system. A firefighter answers
the call as though an emergency dispatcher were talking to the child,
instructing the child to speak calmly and provide necessary information.
Three surveillance cameras mounted on the inside of the trailer allow
teachers, parents and the next group of children to view the safety exercise
via a TV mounted on the outside of the trailer.
The trailer being considered will allow access to the physically challenged
students with their special needs.
In 1994, a Fire Safety Trailer borrowed from the Illinois Fire Inspectors
Association visited several schools in Orland. Over 2,600 school children
went through the trailer in one week. This program missed several schools
due to time constraints.
Additionally, it was setup outside Leaps and Bounds one weekend and over
1,000 children went through it in less than two days.
The Fire Safety Trailer will be available, if purchases, at fire station
tours, block parties and special events.
The cost of a trailer to meet the need outline will be about $40,000. A
fundraising kickoff will take place during Orland Days. A trailer like the
one we intend to purchase will be set up on the Orland Days grounds.
Firefighters will be available to put children through the trailer and
answer questions.
